This is What We Believe

There is One Body, and One Spirit, One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism, One God and Father of all (Ephesians 4:4-6). The New Testament reveals all we need to know as Christians, and as a Christian Church, and it is our complete statement of belief. However the following are important beliefs that we hold at the Bright Church of Christ:

  1. That God the Creator of the Universe is our Heavenly Father, who has revealed Himself to us through the created world, the Scriptures, and supremely through Jesus Christ. God the Father, Jesus His Son and the Holy Spirit are One (Matthew 28:19).
  2. That all Scripture is inspired by God and is our guide for what we do and how we do it (2 Timothy 3:15 -16). The Old Covenant, contained in the Old Testament, has now been superseded by the New Covenant contained in the New Testament (Hebrews 7:15).
  3. That we are witnesses to Christ – to His virgin birth, to His perfect life and ministry, and to His atoning death and resurrection. Jesus is now our mediator with God the Father in heaven and we live in expectation of His coming again as Saviour for His people and as judge of the world (1Thessalonians 4:16; 5:3; 1Timothy 2:5).
  4. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever and He continues to do in our time through the Church, what he did when He lived on earth. He has commission us to bring the ‘good news' of His Kingdom, saving, healing and making disciples of all nations (Hebrews 13:8; Matthew 28:18-20).
  5. That we were created in the image of God but rebelled and sinned against our Creator – causing death and breaking our relationship with Him (Genesis 2:3). Being sinful, every person needs Salvation through repentance toward God, faith in Jesus Christ, and by being ‘born again' of the Spirit - so that relationship with God is restored. Those who reject the Gospel of Christ are eternally lost and subject to God's judgment (Acts 2:38; John 3).
  6. That the Christian church is a worldwide community of all who are ‘born again', confessing Jesus Christ as Lord. The Church was formed when Jesus sacrificed His life and when the Holy Spirit was given at Pentecost (Acts 20:28; Acts 2). Because God desires a unified Church we express our oneness with other Christians, doing what we can together. We are associated with other like minded congregations in the fellowship of Churches of Christ in Australia (Ephesians 4:13; John 17).
  7. All the resources we need to live the Christian life and to operate as a Church are provided by the Holy Spirit. All the gifts of the Spirit listed in the Scriptures are valid and necessary today (Ephesians 4:11; 1 Corinthians 12; 1 Peter 4:9-11). Each Christian is appropriately gifted for service through Spirit Baptism or fillings of the Spirit.
  8. The fruit of the Spirit is manifested in all believers as they ‘walk in the Spirit', producing holy and Christ-like lives (Galatians 5:22-23).
  9. That all believers are priests or ministers of Christ (1 Peter 2:5 & 9); a person's spiritual gifting determines what ministries they perform, and how they serve the Lord. The ministry gifts are given to build- up the Church to maturity (Ephesians 4:11-14). Pastors and elders are ordained to provide spiritual oversight to the congregations (1 Timothy 5:17).
  10. That the two ongoing ordinances for the Church are baptism in water and the Lord's Supper. We celebrate the Lord's Supper regularly. Baptism is by immersion of people old enough to express their own faith (Acts 2:38). We practice the dedication and blessing of children and their parents as requested.
  11. That we are “salt” and “light” in the community where we express our faith in our relationships (Mat.5:13-14). We affirm the dignity, equality and value of every person and seek to bring justice where people are disregarded, and support where there is disadvantage (James 1:27 & 2).
